At Boston Pioneers Academy we aim to provide the highest quality pastoral support throughout the school. One of the central tenets of our curriculum intent is:
Care, guidance and support: ‘Nobody cares how much you know; until they know how much you care’
This acknowledges the importance we place on children receiving high-quality care, guidance and support as we recognise that pupils who are socially and emotionally healthy have a greater chance of achieving success in school and in later life.
Positive Social, emotional development builds the communication skills necessary for learning throughout a child’s life and beyond. Listening, problem solving, teamwork and resilience are key employment skills for the future and so failure to explicitly develop these in our students, would be a failure on our part to prepare them for life in Modern Britain.
Our staff team have been trained in supporting children with a variety of pastoral needs, including those that have been subject to adverse childhood experiences. In addition, we work closely with members of our Trust’s Extended Services Team who are trained to deliver specific interventions to our pupils including mindfulness, The Friends Resilience Programme & Lego Therapy.
If a child needs additional support with their emotional health and wellbeing, we may offer them specific intervention with one of our Extended Services Team. However, all school staff will always listen, comfort and work together with the child and families to ensure a positive outcome.
The role of the Extended Services Team:
- To support and work alongside parents in addressing pastoral concerns impacting on their child’s learning and development.
- To work with staff in ensuring good pupil support and build upon the caring and respectful relationships that exist between staff, pupils and their families.
- To provide specialist support to individual children; listening and talking to children who may need support in a variety of pastoral issues, for example, self-esteem and confidence, bereavement, managing feelings, anxieties/worries, separation and developing social and friendships skills. (This may be delivered on a 1:1 or small group basis).
- Meeting with parents/carers to discuss issues relating to their child, undertaking Early Help Assessments as required.
- To ‘signpost’ families to outside services for appropriate provision and support to ensure the continuity and progress of individual pupils
Who do I contact if I have a pastoral concern about my child?
If you have a pastoral concern regarding your child, please speak initially to your child’s class teacher or our Deputy Head for Curriculum and Pastoral Care, Mrs Lacey. They will then refer this on to the appropriate person depending upon the particular needs identified.
